Switches are the part of the network nobody sees and everybody depends on. They power your access points, connect every wired device, and decide how much traffic the building can actually move. Choosing the right PoE switch for a school or campus comes down to a handful of decisions: how much power you need, whether you want cloud or on-premises management, and whether you need Layer 2 or Layer 3. Start with PoE: the power budget
Power over Ethernet lets a switch deliver electricity and data to a device over one cable — essential for ceiling-mounted access points, cameras and IP phones. The two classes you’ll see most:

Most modern campus access points want PoE+. Two numbers matter when choosing a switch:
- Per-port power — enough for your chosen AP.

A common mistake is buying a switch that supports PoE+ per port but doesn’t have enough total budget to power every port simultaneously. Always check the aggregate figure.
Cloud-managed vs on-premises management
This is the big operational choice.
Cloud-managed switches (like the Cisco Meraki MS220-24P and MS225-24P) are configured and monitored through a web dashboard from anywhere. They’re ideal for lean IT teams and multi-site institutions because you can manage every building from one screen, push changes remotely and see live health across the campus.
Controller / CLI-managed switches (like the Aruba models below) give granular control and don’t depend on a subscription dashboard, which some institutions prefer for core infrastructure and tighter data-governance requirements.
Layer 2 vs Layer 3
- Layer 2 access switches connect devices and APs within a segment. The Meraki MS220/MS225 are L2 access switches well suited to wiring closets.

- Stacking lets several switches act as one for easier management and resilience — useful in larger buildings.

- List every powered device per closet and add up the watts → sets your PoE budget.
- Decide cloud vs on-prem management based on team size and governance needs.
- Choose L2 for access, L3 for aggregation/core.
- Size uplinks (SFP+) to the traffic, and consider stacking in big buildings.
- Leave port headroom for growth — aim to fill closer to 80% than 100%.
